About this event: Dr. James J. McKenna introduces a new conceptual and epidemiological category, breastsleeping for parents, healthcare providers, and IBCLCs.
In this session, The Return of Breastsleeping: Humankind’s Most Successful Sleep and Feeding Arrangement, its aim is to introduce and justify a new conceptual and epidemiological category, breastsleeping, that makes distinctions physiologically and behaviorally between the breastfeeding-bedsharing mother-baby dyad and the bottle or formula fed-bedsharing dyad arguing that the breastleeping behavior deserves to be recognized as legitimate and acceptably safe when practiced (as its definition suggests) in the absence of all known hazardous factors. This argument reflects the full application of evidence based medicine, unlike the AAP’s recommendations against bedsharing under any circumstances that violates the most important evidence based medicine procedures and requirements, impacting healthcare providers and IBCLCs who seek evidence-based information.

La Leche League is the world’s foremost authority on breastfeeding. Our mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education. We want to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. La Leche League is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization and is now celebrating its 62nd year. Today volunteer La Leche League Leaders reach over 300,000 women in 62 countries every month.
Meetings are open to any interested women; babies and expectant women are welcome (men are welcome at special meetings only). Bring questions on any aspect of breastfeeding. No fee is charged for attending meetings. Begin attending any meeting and attend as many as you like. If you wish to continue after your first meeting, we encourage you to buy a La Leche League membership which increases commitment and helps support our volunteer work. You may enjoy socializing in the half hour before and after meetings. Meetings generally last one hour.
Become a member for $40 a year. When you become a La Leche League member, you support the efforts of your local Group Leaders who are volunteers, and you join an international mother-to-mother helping network with over fifty years experience in sharing practical mothering wisdom, as well as enhance your commitment to this normal start.
To become a member contact one of the Leaders or attend a Meeting and join there.
*Please note: our meetings follow the NYC public school schedule for snow days*
